Systematics, taxonomy, phylogeny, biogeography and evolution of two-winged insects (Diptera) with special emphasis on the Tachinidae family-group (Calliphoridae, Oestridae, Rhinophoridae, Sarcophagidae, Tachinidae). Diptera nomenclature. Large-scale biodiversity inventories.

Entomology: structure, phylogeny and biology of terrestrial arthropods (with other staff members/research associates of the Entomology Department; for 3rd or 4th year students in spring terms).

Phylogenetic systematics; (with other staff members of the Natural History Museum of Denmark; international PhD course on principles and analytical methodology, two weeks in March in uneven years.

Associate professor at Danish Bilharziasis Laboratory 1990-1992.

Research entomologist at Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet, Stockholm 1994-2004.

Associate professor at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen University 2004--present.

Member of the International Council of Zoological Nomenclature (from 2006), member of the Council for the International Congresses of Dipterology (from 2006, chair from 2010), member of the scientific advisory committee for Museum Koenig in Bonn (2004-2009, chair from 2006), serving on several scientific panels for SYNTHESYS (Stockholm, Budapest, London: 2002-2008). Editorial committees and advisory boards: Entomotropica, Studia dipterologica, Stuttgarter Beiträge zur Naturkunde (Ser. A), Tijdschrift voor Entomologie.
