Personal profile

Primary fields of research

I study the role of media in everyday life and in broader societal processes and contexts. My focus is on digital media, their diffusion and usage, their communicative characteristics and interplay with other media. My research includes the following topics:

  • self-tracking and social media in everyday life

  • methodological development in digital media research

  • media innovation

  • datafication: privacy and personal data protection in a regulatory and ethical perspective

  • sociological media and communication theory

Current research

At the moment, I work on three interrelated projects:

Self-tracking as flow studies how ordinary people use of various forms of self-tracking in the private realm, what experiential meanings self-tracking attains for them, and how it contributes to borader processes of datafication of daily living.

Tracking the trackers explores cookie-based tracking of users across websites, mapping infrastructures for data flow and ownership in Denmark and the EU.

Personalizing the professional: changing genres at the work/life intersection is about how we manage and redraw the boundaries between work and personal life through changing practices of communication: blurring professional and personal communication genres, disconnecting to regulate accessibility etc. The project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.

I am a member of the research group Digital Communication and Aesthetics
