Currently Professor of Periodontology and Head of Section 1 (Periodontology, Oral Surgery, Oral Pathology and Medicine, Oral Microbiology, Oral Radiology, Oral Physiology, and Community Dentistry), School of Dentistry, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

Cand.Odont. 1971, PhD 1976, Board Certified Specialist in Oral Surgery 1983, Dr.Odont. 1985. Honorary Doctor (Odont.Dr.) at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg 2005.Ten years employment at Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital of Copenhagen. Professor and Chairman from 1988 at Department of Periodontology and Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 2004-06 and 2014-2018. In addition, part-time Professor and Chairman, Department of Periodontology, School of Dentistry, Aarhus University 2008-12 followed by Adjunct Professorship 2012-17.

Research

Initiator of national and international interdisciplinary research collaboration in oral and periodontal medicine, including prognostic, pathogenic and therapeutic aspects of premalignant diseases of the oral mucosa and diseases of periodontal tissues. Current research in our research group aims at increasing the understanding of periodontitis and the association of this disease with medical diseases, particularly diabetes, cardiovascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

Initiator of and supervisor for 24 PhD-projects. More than 300 publications in national and international journals and textbooks. H-index: 45 (Web of Science).

Teaching

Undergraduate teaching of dental and medical students since 1971. Postgraduate education activity with around 450 courses, seminars and guest lectures for dentists and physicians in DK and abroad including specialist courses for oto-, rhino-, laryngologists and dermatologists, and guest lectures in Europe, Africa, Americas, Russia and Asia. DANIDA short-term expert in China 1983 and 1987. Member of Danish Dental Association’s Board of Education 1994-2006 and of Danish Council of Health Educations, Danish Ministry of Education, 1999-2003.

Leadership

Head of research groups and of clinical departments. Chairman of various committees in the Dental School and at Faculty level. Deputy Rector of the Royal Dental College 1988-92. Chairman of Dental Research and Grants Committee 1993-96. Deputy Head of the Dental Institute 1996-99 and 2002-06. From 2010 Head of Section, and member of Leadership Group, School of Dentistry, University of Copenhagen.

Other activities

Since 1990 member of more than 100 expert committees in Scandinavia, Britain, Arabia, Asia and the U.S. President, Danish Section of the International Association for Dental Research 1987-92. Organizer and chairman and vice-chairman of international conferences including two EU-funded conferences in Copenhagen 1990. Expert for the Danish Board of Health and appointed Dental Examiner for Danish Medico-Legal Council and for the Board of Appeal on Dental Injuries. Member of Editorial Boards of 5 and referee for 30 international dental and medical scientific journals. Member of Editorial Board for Danish Dental Journal and Editor of the Nordic Yearbook of Dentistry. Editor-in-Chief, Oral Health and Preventive Dentistry 2002-14 and of Acta Odontologica Scandinavica from 2014. From 1998 Member of the Board of Scandinavian Society of Periodontology, President 2003-06 and 2013-16. Member of International Association for Dental Research Committee on Ethics in Dental Research 2001-04, Chairman 2003-04. Member of the Danish Committee on Scientific Dishonesty in Health Science 2006-14. From 2009 President of the Danish Academy of Periodontology.

Since 2000 personally received DKK 4,080,000 and since 2007 in collaboration with others received DKK 18 million from various funds.
