Current research

Phylogeny and evolutionary history of dinoflagelates. This subject is addressed though nucleotide sequencing of clonal cultures and single-cell PCR of nuclear-encoded genes (i.e. LSU and SSU rRNA). Sequences of mitochondrial genes are also included in this study. The species studied are sampled world wide in both freshwater and marine environments.

Another ongoing research project addresses the biodiversity of the microalgal community in the Ikka-fjord (South western Greenland). To characterize the community of microalgae in the open water and attached to the ikka columns this study uses a combination of light and transmission electron microscopy in addition molecular methods.
