Personal profile

Short presentation

My research concentrates on health-related issues concerning forms of knowledge and practice within medical technologies. I analyse how lay people and professionals handle different kinds of medical knowledge and technologies. As the co-director of the departmental research group Knowledge, Organization and Politics and a co-promotor to the opening of the Centre for the Sociological Study of Science, Expertise and Society (CEVES) I apply perspectives of sociology of health, knowledge and professions in examining practices and institutions such as medicine and health technology.

I have been a visiting scholar and research fellow at University of California (Berkeley), Macquarie University (Sydney), and Manchester University (UK).

Current research

Currently, I collaborate with colleagues on a research project in which we are studying how contemporary globalized societal challenges come to be translated into new localized profession-driven responses. Our project, Global Challenges Local Solutions? Rethinking Professional Work in a World of Trans-local Jurisdictions is supported by the Danish Council for Independent Research. My subproject traces 'prevention of lifestyle-related diseases' as a set of professional boundary work where different segments of health professions create, and sometimes stabilize or standardize techniques for ways of reducing the development of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes.

In a former research project I was engaged in a large research group on the project, UC Care, about social, economic and cultural implications of antibiotic resistance, funded by UCPH, Excellence Programme for Interdisciplinary Research, University of Cph.’s 2016 Funds. My subproject focussed on what is 'good doctoring' seen in the perspective of global problems such as antimicrobial resistance. How is this issue challenging the agenda of the doctor-patient encounter in general practice where most antibiotics are prescribed? Before that, I conducted and was the P.I. for a research project about alternative medicine, funded by The Danish Council for Independent Research / Social Sciences. The project involved analyses of users’ health strategies and bodily experiences to examine why alternative medicine is so popular in Denmark and elsewhere.
