Dorte Skot-Hansen, born 1946 in Copenhagen, started her career studying Theatre Arts at UCLA in the 1960’s. Back in Denmark she changed her path towards more theoretical studies and became Ph.D. (mag. art.) in Cultural Sociology at the University of Copenhagen in 1975.
Since 1974 Skot-Hansen has been working as associate professor at The Royal School of Library and Information Science in Copenhagen where she has taught and done research in the fields of cultural policy, library policy, cultural diversity, cultural planning and experience economy.

Since 1998 Skot-Hansen has been head of Centre for Cultural Policy Studies established for the purpose of strengthening basic as well as applied research in the field of Cultural Policy in Denmark. Here she works jointly with the school's own research academics and researchers undertaking ad hoc assignments. The Centre has conducted a long list of evaluations in commission from the state, municipalities and public cultural organisations. Also she works as a consultant on cultural policy and cultural planning, i.e. formulating af new cultural policy for the municipality of Albertslund.

In 2003-5 she was a member of the scientific committee of the EU project EUROCULT21, a project concerning the development of cultural politics in 23 European cities. She has been a member of the scientific committee of the Nordic conference for Cultural Policy Research until 2011 and still functions as a reviewer for several academic journals. She is chair of the Norwegian Culture Counsil’s R&D-board and a member of the Swedish Myndigheten för Kulturanalys.

The last years Skot-Hansen has been increasingly focused on the “City as a scene – cultural planning in experience society” as the book with this title (published in 2007 in Danish) discusses. In this connection she has worked with town planners and architects i.e. in the Metropolis Seminars initiated by KIT (Copenhagen International Theatre).

The report “The Museum in the Danish Experience Economy – when Enlightenment becomes an Experience” (in Danish 2008), a report which is part of the research project imagine at Copenhagen Business School mapping the sectors of experience economy in Denmark.
From 2009-11 Skot-Hansen has been part of a project on public libraries in urban development, funded by Realdania. The main result is the book "The Public Library in Urban Development, Experience, Creativity and Innovation (2011 in Danish) For articles in English see publicationlist.

2012-13 Skot-Hansen is a consult for Signal Archtects in connection with "Model Program for Public Libraries" by Kulturstyrelsen, funded by Realdania.
