Myresearch focuses on the biosynthesis, evolution and physiological function of specialized metabolites in plants. I have a special focus on the superfamily of cytochromes P450 (CYPs), their redox partner, the NADPH-dependent cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase (POR), and UDP-glycosyltransferases. Together, these enzymes play key roles in metabolite biosynthesis, which ultimately allow plants to respond and interact with their biotic and abiotic environment.
Cyanogenic glucosides, a class of amino acid-derived defense compounds, are biosynthesized by the combined action of CYPs, POR and UDP-glycosyltransferases. The biosynthetic pathway has evolved independently in different linages and provide a unique system to study genetic signatures behind specialized metabolite biosynthesis and evolution.
