"The interface of Big Data, IPRs &Competition Law in SynBio and SysBio- From Big Data to Smart Data", 4th Global Synthetic Biology & Gene Editing Congress, December 4-5th, 2017, London, UK.

Activity: Talk or presentation typesLecture and oral contribution

Description

Gene editing technologies are troubled by several patent disputes that are being fought out within a complex and hazy innovation landscape. Many overlapping and interdependent patent claims and applications are directed to the basic CRISPR/Cas9 system and methods for its use, but also to new developments or improvements thereof. In addition to competing research groups claiming foundational features of the CRISPR/Cas9 technology, other parties hold patents or have submitted patent applications that are relevant to further specific applications of gene editing. Given the number of research teams working in this area, the complexity of the patent landscape is likely to increase with time and generate further disputes. This presentation will describe and analyze the newest developments in the CRISPR/Cas9 patent battles in order to discuss policy choices and practical implications.
