Description

Roundtable debate with the President of Iceland on ‘Nationalism, Populism and Globalization – Nordic Perspectives’ The President of Iceland Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson visited Copenhagen on the 25th of January 2017 and led a roundtable discussion together with rector Ralf Hemmingsen and invited professors at the University of Copenhagen. The Crown Prince Couple attended the roundtable. The event took place in the Ceremonial Hall at University of Copenhagen, on the theme: ’Nationalism, Populism and Globalization – Nordic Perspectives’: First Brexit happens, then Trump gets elected. Are people standing up to the establishment? There seem to be a growing tension both within and between the nations in preference to globalization vs. self-sufficiency, inclusion vs. exclusion and the general public vs. the perceived ‘elite’. Is this divide more consequential and harder to reconcile than traditional left-right differences? What tools do national leaders have at their disposal to react and what is particularly interesting in a Nordic perspective?
