“In the same town…”Contemporary Fictional Representations of Greek-Turkish Co-existence Under Ottoman Rule

  • Trine Stauning Willert (Lecturer)

Activity: Talk or presentation typesLecture and oral contribution

Description

The talk brings attention to a number of Greek historical novels published in the past 15 years dealing with the changes in the Ottoman Empire from the mid eighteenth to the early twentieth century. Particular focus will be on one specific novel that revolves around the close friendship between a Greek-Christian and an Ottoman-Muslim boy giving equal voice to the Greek and the Ottoman/Turkish protagonist. The trend in historical novels dealing with the Ottoman period will be considered in the broader context of Modern Greek literature and popular culture as well as in relation to developments in historiography and politics.
