title = "When the Past Becomes the Present",
abstract = "While Eduard Nielsen almost sixty years ago placed the Shechem traditions in a pre-exilic contexts as evidence of a competition be-tween Jerusalem and Shechem with roots in the pre-monarchical period, re-cent studies have shown that it is better to see this animosity in an early Hel-lenistic context between the two growing religious centers of the central high-lands in Shechem and Jerusalem. However, the method of close reading found in Eduard Nielsens study as representative of the Uppsala school of Old Testament Studies has, still in this new context, much to offer for our un-derstanding of the Shechem-Jerusalem traditions in the Old Testament.",
