Abstract
In this contribution, an attempt is made to characterize information science, largely interpreted as an information retrieval discipline, from a synchronous perspective, where the current position of information science in a field of other sign-related and vocabulary-concerned disciplines is determined (besides linguistics, terminology science and research in languages for special purposes). Within this framework of analysis, information retrieval is postulated as the core of information science, containing information search context and the concepts of information need and relevance as central elements. Under this restrictive precondition it becomes possible to explain synchronously the relationships of information science to its neighbor disciplines through a set of discipline- specific sign requirements in a network of systematic connections. The relationships between the disciplines are described by two dimensions, control/liability and localization of the vocabulary ("in the mind" vs. in external documents), and a superordinate principle of syntagmatization, uniting those two dimensions, is proposed.
