The effect of land fragmentation on farm performance: a comprehensive farm-level study from Denmark

Abstract

This paper analyses the effect of land fragmentation on the performance of Danish farms based on a cross-sectional farm-level data set from 2014. Our measures of land fragmentation indicate the size and shape of the fields as well as inter-field distances and distances between farm buildings and fields. Fragmented land is expected to increase costs and reduce production and, thus, decrease the performance of farms. Preliminary results based on two methodological approaches both indicate no statistically significant effect of field shape, while smaller field
sizes and longer distances significantly reduce performance.
