N2 - New evidence of trade in raw materials and finished knitted garments is emerging from a study of more than 100 extant wool caps from the sixteenth century. These long-overlooked archaeological data are being re-excavated from museum collections for analysis in innovative ways. They offer an opportunity to assess the potential for scientific techniques, which are breaking new ground in textile archaeology, to pioneer insights into the history of dress. This paper reviews a selection of these approaches and discusses some of the opportunities and challenges presented.
