Abstract
Arab film production is a window into national and regional narratives and the imaginaries of Arab and religious social groups. Whereas current public debates assign a great deal of attention to political Islam and explicit religious identification, Arab film production to a larger degree emphasizes religious practices in everyday life. In this chapter, movies with explicit as well as implicit representation of religion, and their contribution to the construction of Arab religious identities, will be examined. The case material that illustrates this connection is from Egyptian cinema, primarily from 1952 to 2000, since in this period the Egyptian film industry dominated, and had a huge influence on, Arab film production.
