N2 - This study presents the rediscovery of Plantago commersoniana in Uruguay, which was hitherto considered eradicated in this country, as it had not been collected there since 1767. This finding is very important not only for the conservation of P. commersoniana, an endangered species, but also for its taxonomy as this species has a very complex delimitation and circumscription. As the type originated from Uruguay, the findings reported here make these Uruguayan populations of critical importance to a better taxonomic understanding of the species. We also designate here a lectotype for the name Plantago selloi, a synonym of P. commersoniana. Furthermore, we present here the first identification key to all the 12 species of Plantago that occur in Uruguay.
