Realism in Foreign Policy Analysis

Abstract

Realists explain foreign policy in terms of power politics, but they disagree on the exact meaning of power and on how and to what extent politics is likely to influence policy. A the same time, the history of realism is also a history of analyzing, critiquing, and advising foreign policy. This article discusses the contribution of classical realism, structural realism (offensive and defensive realism) and neoclassical realism to explaining foreign policy and unpacks the challenges and opportunities of realism as a foreign policy theory.
