Abstract
To understand the visual dimension of transnational protest, we examine the actors behind the creation of images. Following Roland Barthes (1967), we could say that once an image is “out” in a global digitalised public space, the authors can no longer control its interpretation. However, we know much less about the actors behind the images that spread transnationally - particularly if those actors are small, non-insti - tutionalised social movement groups who create images that become viral. Who created an image that went viral in social media, and which brokers (e.g. media actors, sympathisers, officials) have been engaged in the process of diffusion? Which audiences are addressed by each image, and how do audiences in different national and political contexts interpret and react to the image?.
