Abstract

The advent of crop cultivation several thousand years ago initiated an unceasing quest for trait improvement. Nowadays, enhancing the photosynthetic capacity of crops is regarded as being one of the most promising ways to increase yield and biomass production. This article outlines the processes underlying oxygenic photosynthesis in land plants, the regulatory mechanisms that modulate photosynthetic light reactions in response to environmental changes, and the strategies and adaptations used by photoautotrophs to maximize CO2 fixation. Furthermore, ongoing and novel genetic engineering approaches are highlighted that aim to reconfigure the processes of photosynthesis to optimize crop yield and quality.
