Person Parameter Estimation and Measurement in Rasch Models

Abstract

During analysis by Rasch models, estimates of person parameters are regarded as measures of unobservable latent traits, and the bias and standard errors of the estimates are regarded as measurement bias and standard error of measurement (SEM). This chapter describes person parameter estimation in dichotomous and polytomous Rasch models. It illustrates the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) and the weighted maximum likelihood estimate (WMLE) using the data set from the disinhibited eating (DE) subscale of the Diabetes Health Profile (DHP) inventory. The chapter explains how to assess the quality of measurement provided by Rasch model items from a population point of view.
