Abstract
The essay attempts to understand the emerging genre of what in scholarship has been subsumed under the notion of "liturgical drama" within Latin medieval liturgical ceremonies in the light of early medieval sacramental notions. Quem quaeritis ceremonies around 1200 from Laon are used to exemplify how such ceremonies were sometimes appropriated so as to emphasise the efficacy of the Eucharist. Through a discussion of the development of the understanding of the notion of a sacrament in the twelfth century, the Fleury Playbook Conversion of Paul is analysed, raising the question whether it should be regarded as a Saint's Play or a sacramental ritual.
