Abstract

Copenhagen has undergone major societal and linguistic changes during the latest century. Some changes are general to Denmark, while others are specific to the Copenhagen community. In the following we present a brief overview of some of the historical developments that have led to the present demographic and linguistic situation in Copenhagen. We focus on minority language groups and their status in Copenhagen and in Danish society in general. At the same time, throughout the chapter our main focus is the disappearing division between high and low Copenhagen speech, which accompanies the emergence of new types of linguistic variation.
