Abstract
In the beginning of 2015, the World Health Organization issued a new set of guidelines for sugar intake in adults and children focusing on body weight regulation and dental caries.5 A strong recommendation was given to reduce intake of free sugars to <10% of total energy intake (E%) throughout the life course for both adults and children. A conditional recommendation was also given to reduce the intake further to <5 E%. ese guidelines are not very dierent from the ones issued in 2003 and the limit of 10 E% sugar is neither new nor revolutionary. In fact, most dietary guidelines state that added/free sugars should be limited to 10 E% for heterogeneous population groups, for example, the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations.6 e 5% limit introduced now is new, but the evidence behind it is regarded as very weak.
