Abstract

The substantial societal and individual burdens associated with tension-type headaches (TTHs) constitute a major public health issue. TTH affects up to 78% of the general population and 3% suffer from the chronic subform. Pericranial myofascial nociception is probably important for the pathophysiology of episodic TTH, whereas sensitization of central nociceptive pathways seem to be responsible for the conversion of episodic to chronic TTH. The headache-related disability can usually be reduced by the identification of trigger factors combined with nonpharmacological and pharmacological treatments, but specific and effective treatment modalities are lacking.
