Abstract

Education in general and universities in particular are important preconditions for nation building. Before the introduction of Home Rule in Greenland, a proposal from the Greenland Provincial Council to move the “Institute of Eskimology” at the University of Copenhagen to Greenland was turned down. Following the implementation of Home Rule in 1979, the government of Greenland soon proposed the first Act on Ilisimatusarfik/University of Greenland. In the introduction of the law in the parliament in the autumn of 1981, the minister for culture and education made a clear distinction between Danish and Greenlandic institutions of research and underlined the timely need of national institutions for Greenland, and after the three readings in parliament the act on Ilisimatusarfik was unanimously adopted. The debate in the parliament of Greenland clearly shows the affinity with core values of nation building such as language, history, culture, community, people and nation.
