Abstract
The Greenlandic population is characterised by migrations from two major areas: the northern parts of North America and Scandinavia. Y-chromosomal haplogroup (Y-HG) P*(xR1-M173)-M45 was previously found in up to 50% of Greenlanders. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of sub-HGs within Q-M242 in the Greenlandic population. A multiplex of 15 Y-chromosomal single nucleotide polymorphisms (Y-SNPs) covering major sub-HGs within Q-M242 was constructed using the AssayDesign software (Sequenom) and analysed on the Sequenom platform. Two sub-HGs within Q-M242 were found in the Greenlandic population, Q-L56, L57(xM19, M323, L529) and Q-NWT01(xM265). An increase of Inuit Y-HGs along the coastline from Qeqqata (30%) in the West to East Sermersooq (82%) was found. A corresponding decrease was found for European Y-HGs, from 59% in Qeqqata to 16% in East Sermersooq.
