Abstract
Infectious disease management in pig herds may be based on either disease control or disease eradication. Disease control programs focus on immunity induced by vaccines or controlled infection, on antibiotic treatment of clinical and subclinical disease outbreaks, and on management programs that help making animals more robust and infections less likely to spread. Disease eradication programs rely on absence of infectious pathogens. Pig production in specific pathogen free herds is associated with a consistent increase in animal health, animal welfare, and productivity.
