Abstract

According to Flavius Josephus, the emperor Tiberius ordered the temple of Isis in Rome destroyed and its priesthood crucified in AD 19 because of a lurid affair involving sex and bribery. The alleged incident is not known from any other ancient source, and details of the story suggests it represents a literary fiction created to put the expulsion of the Jews from Rome that same year into an apologetic perspective.
