Abstract
This article explores how youth in Bengaluru in India are transgressing cultural norms for relationships and appropriate conduct for women, and how the ways in which parents react to these transgressions in themselves are transgressions of other cultural norms - including the law. Such reactions have both discouraging and escalating effects. The article therefore argues that transgressions can be a way of negotiating in a society with multiple norms - a transgressive negotiation.
