My main field of research is population ecology involving quantitative aspects like population dynamics (changes in population sizes and distributions over time), predator-prey interactions, biological control of pests, metapopulations, and reproductive strategies. The role of spatial processes, including local extinctions, dispersal and colonisations, has been one of my favourite research topics. Experimentally, I have worked with spider mites and predatory mites with the purpose of testing simulation models of predator-prey dynamics against empirical data. Recently, I conducted field in Greenland with purpose of studying adaptations of the seed bug Nysius groenlandicus to environmental conditions. As a spin-off of my interest in spatial dynamics, I have developed various statistical methods to obtain reliable estimates of population abundance with minimum sampling effort. After my retirement November 2012, I have worked together with Henrik Skovgård, University of Århus, on modeling biological control of stable flies by means of parasitoids. The project is financed by the Danish Ministry of Environment. I also collaborate with Amy Roda, Florida, on the ecology and control of The Giant African Land Snail, which is an invasive species in Southern Florida.
Downloads FIToM - "From Individuals to Metapopulations": A collection of projects used for teaching and research purposes in population ecology. Download the zipped file to your desktop and click on the Fitom.exe icon. The program will be installed in a subdirectory under "Program files" called "Fitom". The executable file is called Fitom.exe. A short-cut to Fitom.exe should be available on your desktop.
How to download and install Fitom.pdf describes how you can download Fitom, which include The Fly Simulator as one of its projects.
Manual to The Fly Simulator.pdf is the manual to The Fly Simulator.
Sampling.pdf is lecture notes on sampling methods of insects and mites.
