Beskrivelse
This seminar paper based on an ongoing book project will attempt to give an overview of developments in the contested field of Ottoman legacy in Greece over the past 15-20 years. Particular focus will be given, on the one hand, to new directions in Greek historiography and Ottoman Studies and, on the other, to the rise in historical novels about the Ottoman period. This increasing interest in the centuries of Ottoman rule, running parallel with the Ottoman revival in Turkey, is primarily framed in discourses of tolerance, nostalgia and cosmopolitanism thus challenging the traditional image of Ottoman rule as the despotic, barbaric and oppressive Turcocracy. With examples from historiographic debates and contemporary historical fiction the paper discusses how these new discourses in different ways are employed to revise Greek national narratives and images of self and other. As an illustration of new approaches to the Ottoman period the paper will bring attention to the phenomenon of ‘changing roles’, i.e. focusing on Ottoman Greeks in history writing and lending voice to Turks/Muslims in Greek fiction.Periode | 16 mar. 2017 |
