Rethinking the Greeks in Gandhāra

"What's in a Name? Commerce at the crossroads of Gandhara and the implications of traders' identities" Few of Alexander's Eastern conquests have left so fascinating remains behind, attesting to some degree of Greek heritage, as the area of ancient Gandhara. However, the question about the identity of its inhabitants, whether they be more or less Greek relative to other cultural influences, has proved difficult to settle on the basis of material unearthed in Gandhara alone. Accordingly, this paper takes advantage of the thriving, cross-Eurasian trade intersecting in Gandhara, c. 1st–3rd cent. CE, to investigate evidence of the identity of traders operating in and out of Gandhara from near and far along the trade routes. Even though the meagre corpus of relevant evidence must necessarily restrain the conclusions arrived at, this material may improve our understanding of 'Greekness' in Gandhara.
