Beskrivelse

The primary goal of this seminar is for scholars and students from different disciplines to discuss the approaches and methodologies used to study and understand human life in desert environments. The term desert is meant broadly; encompassing areas all over the globe that share the unfeasibility of rain-based agriculture as a defining characteristic. Among the trajectories explored, are questions pertaining to how landscapes have been conceptualised and used; to the spiritual aspirations of desert peoples; and to continuity and change in ecological strategies and the impact of these on social memory formation. The seminar deliberately employs an interdisciplinary approach in the hope that the participants will find new inspiration in the methodologies applied by their sister-disciplines. The speakers have been carefully selected based on their innovative approaches to desert life. However, this will be the first time that the disciplinary, chronological and geographical scope is wide enough to efficiently encompass such a broad array of methodological approaches.
