Focus: •How was infants fed in in nineteenth century Denmark?•How did the guidance given to mothers by the medical profession about infant feeding develop 1750-2000?•What was best practice when?

Conclusions:  1)In nineteenth century Denmark best practice was in some rural districts - worst practice in other rural districts. 2)In late eighteenth century doctors advise was best practice. 3)In mid nineteenth century doctors advice grew more dangerous - especially the advice of GPs more influenced by fashion in women's bodies than the specialists' 4)In late nineteenth century the medical scientific infant care program offered improvements in bottle feeding and cleanliness, and had knowledge of the superiority of breast feeding. 5)The program did however, include a recipe for the way the breast feeding should be conducted to be safe, that produced lack of milk for many mothers
