Opal joined the Section for Metabolic Genetics at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, as a postdoctoral fellow in 2016 at the Kilpeläinen group (led by Dr. Tuomas O Kilpeläinen). Opal was a visiting postdoctoral fellow from 2017 to 2018 at the Loos lab (led by Dr. Ruth JF Loos) at the Charles R. Bronfman Institute of Personalized Medicine, Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, USA. Opal’s research interest is in the discovery of genetic variants that predispose the conditions of metabolically healthy obesity and metabolically obese normal weight in adults, primarily in European population. She also has collaboration with other researcher in finding genetic basis of metabolically healthy obesity in children.
Opal received her PhD in Biostatistics at McGill University in Montréal, Canada. Her research focus for her PhD thesis was on Transmission Ratio Distortion, a genetic phenomenon where Mendelian inheritance ratio is being violated. She studied the effect of Transmission Ratio Distortion in case- and control-trio family studies. Prior to her PhD, Opal received a Master of Science degree in Biostatistics at University of Toronto, Canada, where she worked on genome-wide association studies on colorectal cancer, and multiple correlated renal and retinal phenotypes in type 1 diabetes.
