Introduction The training of filmmakers and the structure of film schools have been neglected topics in film and media scholarship despite being crucial elements for the institutional landscape of filmmaking as well as for the understanding of individual films and careers. The two-volume anthology "The Education of the Filmmaker" now offers new perspectives on this decisive element of filmmaking through case studies of the educational practices and training programmes in different film cultures around the world. This seminar centres on the research in the book to open for discussions of different frameworks for practice-based film education and various understandings of how to best think about and study this important aspect related to the work of film practitioners. How do filmmakers train around the world? What is the impact of certain film schools over time? Is the current education of filmmakers about furthering the emergence of new artistic voices or rather about creating a skilled work force for the creative media industries? After presentations by the volume editor Mette Hjort and contributor Scott MacKenzie, the seminar offers current perspectives on questions like these through a panel with representatives from the world of academia as well as from the industry. The seminar is organized by Ib Bondebjerg and Eva Novrup Redvall as part of the research priority area Creative Media Industries. The seminar is free to all.Period | 10 Oct 2013 |
