Abstract

Separation of redox-active or chromophoric units by cross-conjugated bridges has a significant impact on the communication between these groups. Thus, a cross-conjugated bridge decreases the electronic communication between two redox centers or a donor-acceptor system in comparison to a linearly conjugated one as revealed by electrochemical, optical, and molecular conductance studies. This chapter illustrates the influence of cross-conjugation in a variety of expanded systems, ranging from extended tetrathiafulvalenes, bimetallic species, cyclic scaffolds like radiaannulenes, dendralenes, quinones, to simple o-, m-, and p-substituted benzenes.
