Abstract
Abstract: Based on his research and practice of both psychological perception and physical environment in the past decades, Jan Gehl
has already formed his own theory of design for staying space. The paper presents the research results for the design of staying space in
two aspects which are three effects for standing space (including edge effect, niche effect and facade effect) and four factors for sitting
space (seat quantity, seat materials, seat location and seat scenery). Through research and introduction of Jan Gehl's theory, the intention
of this paper is that the authors expect that it can play an inspiriting role for promoting the development of both theory and practice in the
design and construction of staying space within the urban public space in China.
